To engage the relevant sports authorities regarding the correct classification for athletes with Paralympic Down Syndrome. Develop projects related to Adapted Swimming in the community, whether at school, in associations or sports clubs. To offer the opportunity so that all children can learn to swim which will enhance their physical, motor and social development.
What we Do
We aim to create opportunities for all young people with disabilities to learn to swim and enjoy the benefits of swimming. We reach out to families, schools, sports clubs, institutions and municipalities to help them to set up appropriate projects that are suitable for their community.
Please join us to arrange Adapted Swimming projects in your Club, School or Municipality. Do you want to help spread the word about Adapted Swimming?
Also to continue the fight to create a classification for Down Syndrome athletes within the Paralympics games.
Please contact us and join this very special cause.
Special 21 aims to develop all sorts of projects that promote swimming among the disabled community, especially young people of school age. As the Portuguese education system welcomes students with special needs in schools, the development of Protocols or Program Contracts in conjunction with the Municipalities is at the moment a very effective way to introduce Swimming as a Discipline in Schools.
“The overall and individual effect on the students participating in the project is unquestionably positive, because by promoting the personal and social integration of these children, we are also promoting autonomy through participation in functional activities.”
“Regardless of continued rejection and discrimination, I, and the Sports Union for athletes with Down Syndrome, will continue to pursue this situation with the IPC and seek a rule change to enable fair participation by athletes with Down syndrome.”
